While Joe Giard's pitching career was less than remarkable, his placement on the iconic 1927 New York Yankees squad sets him apart from other hurlers of the day. While Hall of Famers and teammates Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri and Herb Pennock all passed away in the 1940s, it is this obscure Joe Giard (d.1956) cut signature that is noted by advanced hobbyists as the toughest example from the prolific squad. Neatly extracted from a period blue-and-red-stitched baseball, the black steel-tip fountain pen script presents a readable ("4") and is covered by a wafer-thin coating of period shellac. This canvased relic is "a must" for all Murderers' Row enthusiasts as Giard exemplars are seldom offered for public sale. Full photo LOA from JSA. This item has a reserve. Estimate ($2000-$2500).
