Description

25th President McKinley’s 1896 campaign marked by a policy of protective tariffs and support for the gold standard won him the election amid a period of economic depression. The proffered Program and Dance Card from his first term Inaugural Ball are incredibly well preserved souvenirs of the 4/4/1897 ceremony. The 10x7 program consists of five gorgeous, heavy stock leaves highlighted by engraved portraits of McKinley and Vice-President Hobart. The equally amazing 3 x 4-3/4” Dance Card features embossed gilt images of the successful candidates. More on our website.

Published by Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. of Philadelphia these significant historical relics display exquisite original details throughout including firm covers, bold images, distinct printing, and warmly toned off-white to cream pages minimally affected by age appropriate traces of wear. Right down to their silk ribbon and binding cord these celebratory mementos present a truly “presidential” appearance.

The front cover of the elegant program is decorated by meticulous engravings of the Pension Building and an inset of its ballroom alongside the gold leaf title and date “Inaugural Ball, March 4th, 1897”. The three stately interior leaves marked “Bureau, Engraving & Printing” are protected by tissue paper and are bound with the front and back covers by an impeccable silk ribbon. The first leaf displays engraved portraits of McKinley and Hobart, the second leaf contains a list of “Executive Committee” members and the third leaf features an American Eagle between medallions of the presiding executives’ home states, Ohio and New Jersey. The back cover displays a full color forty-five star U.S. Flag.

The front and back covers of the Dance Card feature raised gilt images of McKinley and Hobart respectively. Page one is a list of the members of the “Executive Committee”. Pages two through eight list the members of the “Floor and Promenade Committee”. Page nine shows the “Order of Opening Exercises”. Pages ten and eleven show the “Order of Dancing”. Page twelve shows the “Bill of Fare”
