His Chicago Bears uniform gave Walter Payton license to run, block, dodge, punish would-be tacklers and perform like no other player in the history of the NFL. In his everyday life, meanwhile, Payton used this Illinois driverís license for trips in his motor vehicle. A unique find in the realm of signed Hall of Fame memorabilia, this official document was issued to Payton during the early portion of his amazing career. The standard size identification piece measures approximately 3-1/2 x 2-7/8Ē and was issued on March 15, 1979. The license lists Paytonís height, weight, birth date and social security number, as well as the Arlington Heights address from just after his marriage to his wife, Connie. At the left, a color photo shows a peaceful expression that belied Paytonís competitive fire on the gridiron, adjacent to a photocopy of his signature. This particular license was valid for three years and shows the expected signs of wear, including staple holes; it was rendered by a police officer following a moving violation (a penalty flag, if you will).
