In production less than a year after Lou Gehrig’s tragic passing, “Pride of the Yankees” was a can’t-miss endeavor in large part because of the timely need for a heroic portrayal and a star-studded cast that included Babe Ruth himself and a virtual Gehrig “double” in Gary Cooper. During the making of that heart-wrenching film, this baseball was signed by (6) key contributors. The medium is a mildly toned OAL Harridge sphere (grade “6”) whose 1940-1945 trademark stampings date to the time of the movie’s production. Keeping with tradition, the sweet spot is home to the signature of Babe Ruth (“7” strength), who, although retired for seven years at the time, still brought his magnetic personality to the set. On the north panel, Gary Cooper (“5-6” strength) and Teresa Wright (“4” strength) are an appropriate pairing in their respective roles as Lou and Eleanor Gehrig. The south panel is home to the scriptings of director Sam Wood (all upper-case; “7-8” strength) and Walter Brennan (sportswriter Sam Blake; “5” strength because of impression affecting the surname). Finally, the east panel is signed by former big leaguer Babe Herman (“6” strength), who worked off camera with Cooper on his baseball skills. A most unique keepsake from a classic chapter in baseball and film history, this relic (like the movie) is certain to get rave reviews. Full photo LOA from PSA/DNA.
